1. Kobe Bryant demands a trade — sort of
In a year that threatened to wipe the smirk off David Stern's face,
customized playing cards story that generated the loudest and longest buzz revolved around
the league's best and best-known player.
On the same day late last May, Kobe Bryant told one radio show he
wanted to be traded, then changed his mind on another radio show. That
night, talking to the Los Angeles Times, he insisted again he wanted
to be traded.
That merely was the beginning. Soon, reports spread through cyberspace
of an audio clip in which Bryant called honda insurance owner, Jerry Buss, an
idiot. At one point during the preseason, Bryant's locker reportedly
had been cleaned out and he was gone for good. Then Buss entered the
fray by saying indeed he would be willing to trade Bryant. It got so
crazy that Bryant was booed during introductions before the Lakers'
home opener. Somehow, the Lakers have started stronger than expected
and trade talk has streetwear fashion For now.
2. Don't bet on it
Referee Tim Donaghy was nabbed for wagering on games in which he
officiated, a transgression the righteous among us insisted would
shake the very foundation of the sport. Well, it hasn't.
3. Who's the man?
With a Jordanesque 48-point performance in the Eastern Conference
